Eric Smiley

Eric Smiley, Solar Academy International’s Instructor for Advanced Level Design Courses, is a professor in the Engineering Department at Vancouver Island University and coordinates a two-year diploma in Green Building and Renewable Energy Technology.
He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering from McGill University and completed his Masters of Applied Science at Simon Fraser University in 2002.
A former board member of the Canadian Solar Industries Association and an Honorary Director of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, Professor Smiley currently serves on the Technical Committee for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners and the Section 50 sub-committee of the Canadian Electrical Code.

Professor Smiley has extensive experience with small scale renewable energy system design, installation and sales including work with micro-hydro, solar electric, and wind electric systems. In addition he worked for six years at the British Columbia Institute of Technology where he conducted applied research and development on the design, modeling and deployment of Building Integrated Photovoltaic Systems. He is registered as a Professional Engineering in the Province of BC and holds a Certificate of Qualification for Photovoltaic System installation in the Province of BC.
